Spain’s Participation in the E-RIHS Initiative
Spain joined the E-RIHS initiative in February 2015, through a declaration of support from the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) for the E-RIHS proposal, signed by the Secretary General for Science, Technology and Innovation. This declaration expressed official support for the proposal and stated that “the national node will be coordinated by CSIC and will include, among others, the Cultural Heritage Institute of Spain of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport (IPCE-MECD) and the National Research Center on Human Evolution (CENIEH).”
The Spanish node of the European infrastructure E-RIHS is currently in its initial development phase. Its structure, composition, and functioning will be defined in parallel with E-RIHS.eu, during the implementation of the European Research Infrastructure for Heritage Science — Preparatory Phase (E-RIHS-PP).
E-RIHS.es will be established according to the participation rules, business plan, and governance model defined during the preparatory phase of the European infrastructure, and following the guidelines set by the ministries involved: the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness (MINECO) and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport (MECD).
The criteria for joining E-RIHS.es will include excellence, uniqueness, capacity, and experience in providing access services to researchers in the conservation of cultural and natural heritage.
E-RIHS: A European Infrastructure for Heritage Science
E-RIHS represents the consolidation of a stable infrastructure built upon a long track record of previous European projects in heritage conservation science and archaeology.
It will provide advanced tools and services from interdisciplinary research groups to scientific users working on the advancement of knowledge about cultural heritage and on innovative strategies for its preservation.
E-RIHS will be structured around four main platforms:
- FIXLAB — providing access to large-scale facilities and fixed laboratories of excellence.
- MOLAB — mobile laboratories that travel to perform in-situ studies.
- ARCHLAB — offering physical access to collections of materials and data archives.
- DIGILAB — integrating and providing access to digital archives.
