Archaeomagnetism
The Archaeomagnetism Laboratory, which belongs to the Center's geochronology laboratories, boasts all of the necessary instruments for the study of the magnetic properties of rocks in order to develop magnetostratigraphies in sediments.
Archaeometry
The main objective of the Archaeometry Laboratory is the characterization of materials, based on the study of their chemical and mineralogical composition, and their vibrational and thermal analysis. It seeks to support research in the areas of geology, archeology, heritage, chemistry, and pharmacy, as well as to provide services in the fields of construction, civil engineering and nanomaterials.
Conservation & Restoration
En the laboratory of the Conservation and Restoration Area, conservation strategies are evaluated and developed (preventive conservation, curative conservation and restoration), aimed at safeguarding both the collections present in the CENIEH and in other national and international. institutions, museums or archaeological sites and paleontological.
Cosmogenic Nuclide Dating
The new cosmogenic nuclide dating Laboratory is one of the Geochronology laboratories at CENIEH. The method is capable measuring surface exposure ages, rock/soil/basin erosion rates, and deposition ages of sediments. The lab will offer full sample preparation of quartz-bearing geological/archaeological materials for the measurements of 10Be and 26A.
Digital Mapping and 3D Analysis
The activities of this laboratory are focused on cartography, reconstruction and spatial analysis of geological and archaeological elements. Among its products, the following are particularly noteworthy: geological and geomorphological cartography, paleogeographic reconstructions, analysis of spatial patterns, 3D reconstructions and the morphometric analysis of archaeological sites and objects for different research projects in Europe and Africa.
Electron Spin Resonance Dating
The Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) laboratory, one of the four geochronology laboratories at CENIEH, is mainly devoted to dating geological and/or archaeological materials such as tooth enamel or optically bleached quartz grains extracted from sediment. Occasionally, it also carries out work in dosimetry and characterization of modern or old geo-materials.
Experimental Archaeology and Taphonomy
The Experimental Archaeology and Taphonomy Laboratory offers full planning and performance of experimental programs centering on solving archaeological conundrums about questions of technology, taphonomy and site formation processes. Among other services, we offer the preparation of exact archaeological replicas for functional experimentation or simulating alterations, directed at applying restoration protocols.
Geology
The objective of the Geology Laboratory is to provide support to other laboratories in the preparation and characterization of different types of samples in different areas of research such as agronomy, environmental studies, paleoclimatic and paleooceanographic studies, geology and geotechnics.
Luminescence Dating
The luminescence laboratory is located on the second floor of the building. It consists of two main sections, the sample preparation room and the IRA 3015 radioactive facility. In both rooms, work is carried out under carefully controlled lighting conditions (red light at a wavelength of between 600 and 690 nm) and with a low light intensity (< 2μW/cm2).
Microscopy and Micro-Computed Tomography Laboratory
The Microscopy and Micro-Computed Tomography Laboratory is located on the first floor and boasts a wide range of equipment enabling the microstructural and elemental characterization of all types of materials (for example, biological, organic and inorganic materials), with practice-oriented analysis, quality control and basic and applied research
Prehistoric Technology and Archaeology
The Prehistoric Technology and Archaeology Laboratory aims to support and encourage research into and the study of collections of prehistoric stone tools, streamlining the processing and analysis of the collections generated by the CENIEH projects and other external bodies and projects. It is designed as a versatile space which adapts to the needs and demands of the users and archaeological materials arriving at its facilities.
Uranium-Series
The Uranium-Series laboratory is one of the pillars of the Geochronology field at CENIEH. Its main objective is to conduct research work and implement services involving elemental and isotopic analyses on different types of material. This laboratory is freely available to the Scientific and Business Community and to Society in General, by offering several technical services from carrying out physical and chemical analyses or consulting and training services to participation and collaboration in research projects.
