My First Geoloday in Burgos

This initiative by the Geological Society of Spain aims to bring geological sciences closer to children and young people, as well as to foster scientific vocations.

The Centro Nacional de Investigación sobre la Evolución Humana (CENIEH) held today in Burgos“Mi Primer Geolodía,” (My first Geoloday), an initiative by the Geological Society of Spain whose main objective is to bring geological sciences closer to children and to encourage scientific vocations among the youngest towards these disciplines.

The program, which brought together 50 Primary Education students at the CENIEH facilities, consisted of four activities, all focused on geology: a volcano workshop, including a volcanic eruption; a scientific gymkhana with questions and skill-based challenges; a visit to the Digital Mapping and 3D Analysis Laboratory, with demonstrations of the handheld 3D scanner and various laboratory tools; and a visit to the Geology Laboratory to observe thin sections of different materials and learn about mineral separation from rocks.

At the end of the day, in response to the question “Who wants to dedicate themselves to Geology?” posed by Chitina Moreno-Torres Rodríguez-Contreras, head of the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit at CENIEH, more than a dozen hands were raised, showing that this initiative has achieved its goal.

This event, which involved scientists, technicians, and administration staff from CENIEH, was supported by the Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología (FECYT) - Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades.
