In relation to the excavations around Tamajón (Guadalajara, Spain), an ongoing annual project is excavating and investigating the findings of the Tamajón karst area (Los Torrejones cave and La Malia rockshelter). The core of this project is a markedly multidisciplinary and inter-institutional investigation with participation by both Spanish and international research centers.
Using the field data and the findings of the archaeopaleontological work, it is intended to learn the subsistence strategies and way of life of these hunter-gatherer populations, both of Neanderthals and Late Paleolithic Homo sapiens. In parallel, another objective of the project is the reconstruction of the ecosystems employing a paleoecological, paleoclimatic and paleoeconomic approach, by studying the faunal remains recovered. To do this, it is of vital importance to know the stratigraphic, geological and geochronological context of the fossil-bearing sediments, as are the assessment and chronocultural assignment of the lithic industry encountered.
The project membership and collaborators include researchers with and without doctorates who are professionals in biology, paleontology, geology, taphonomy, anthropology, archaeology, topography and paleogenetics. The study of the materials from the Los Torrejones cave and the La Malia rockshelter is mainly taking place at the CENIEH, with the support and collaboration of researchers and students from the Universidad de Alcalá (UAH), Centro Mixto UCM-ISCIII de Evolución y Comportamiento Humanos, Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), Universidad del País Vasco (UPV/EHU), Instituto Geológico y Minero de España (IGME), Universidad de Zaragoza (Unizar), and the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History (Germany). The collaboration established with institutions like the Ayuntamiento de Tamajón and the Abismo speleological group is also of inestimable value.
This research project is financed by competitive funding calls by the Consejería de Educación, Cultura y Deportes of the Junta de Comunidades de Castilla la Mancha and the CENIEH.
