Taphonomy

This line of research is in the Archaeological and Paleobiology programs. Zooarchaeology and Taphonomy are two disciplines with origins in very different fields of science. Nevertheless, their application to the world of the Quaternary has meant that they share many objectives, methods and techniques, which has often led to the two terms being used interchangeably, almost as synonyms.

At the CENIEH, these two disciplines are applied principally to investigation of the skeletal remains recovered at the different sites. The aim of these studies is to contribute to knowledge about how the ways of life of human groups of the past evolved, and to understand the processes of accumulation and fossilization of the remains, and their transition from the biosphere to the lithosphere
